Libera me is a chamber music ensemble specialising in 18th century European music. It takes its name from one of the recitatives in the Miserere composed by Joseph MichelThe ensemble is made up of four musicians from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Lyon. It is made up of four musicians from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon who, through this group, explore both forgotten repertoires and essential works from the baroque period. Each musician is trained on several instruments, which gives them a wide range of sounds, allowing them to vary the colours and to choose an ever-expanding repertoire.
From Germany to France in the 18th century
We have chosen to honour the man who was considered by his compatriots to be France's best ambassador to Germany: Georg Philipp Telemann. A lover of French music, he stayed in Paris for eight months in 1737. A great defender of the French style, his correspondence with Carl Heinrich Graun, another renowned composer, records stormy discussions about their vision of musical composition. In this programme we read about their disagreement over the treatment of recitative in Jean-Philippe Rameau. Both amusing and playful, this dispute gives us a better understanding of the musicological issues of the time concerning the rivalries between the "ancients" and the "moderns".
